We are almost done with the Ugly Rich Old White Men admin – but they have time to get in a few last blows. Like making their western rancher buddies happy by letting them run out and kill 1000 of the 1400 wolves in the Rockies.

Now don’t whup me, I have rancher friends. We’ve agreed to disagree about the wolves – which here means the Mexican Red Wolf. Actually, we agree on a few things – such as the reintroduction was mismanaged. But that’s another story.

The story of the grey wolves reintroduction to the Rockies has been largely a success story. The other animals, and even trees in the ecosystem have benefited from the reintroduction of a top predator. You can read more about it here.

After losing twice in court, the lame-duck Bush administration is taking a last shot at endangered wolves — moving, in the waning hours of its power, to strip them of protection all across Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and parts of Oregon, Washington, and Utah.

If finalized, the removal of endangered species protection could result in the killing of 1,000 wolves in 2009 alone.

Please, send the Fish and Wildlife Service a message: Wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains are not yet recovered. They MUST stay on the endangered species list.
