If this looks a little ominous and threatening – just wait for the rest of the story.

Santa Rosa Lake State Park was a disappointment on top of a disappointment, quickly followed by …

Well, I’ll save that for tomorrow.

For now, I’ll say that all the hoopla about following Route 66 is bullshit – a considerable part of it can no longer be driven on. Don’t trust the guide books.

This part of New Mexico is still awful close to Oklahoma – in attitude as well as distance. Strangers, especially strangers who seem a bit different, are not welcomed.

The Santa Rosa Lake State Park was created by the Army’s Crummy Old Engineers who clearly wanted to show off their dam. So unless you are big in to looking at large blobs of cement crapped down onto the landscape – don’t bother. Campsites are as far from the lake as they could put you – probably so you can admire the dam better – and all trails are created to showcase looking at the dam. Every bench in the place is pointed to look at the dam. It’s a great place if you like looking at dams. Not so much if you are into nature and wildlife.
