pyrrhuloxia

Are you taking a picture of me?

Spring is here and even brought a little rain with her this week, along with some of our old migrant pals. The pyrrhuloxia is a very infrequent visitor who causes a lot of excitement when he drops by. Hubby came running to the kitchen and took several photos that turned out quite nicely in spite of overcast skies.

Neither of us can figure out how to pronounce Pyrrhuloxia, so we call him by his common name of Silver Cardinal or quite often – “the color challenged Cardinal”.

Our old pals and my personal favorites, the Yellow-Headed Blackbirds have been around for a few days, too.

Yesterday morning I tossed some cat food that had gotten wet out into the barnyard, expecting it to be snarfed up by the big ravens or other birds. Instead we attracted a much more exciting visitor – and happened to be sitting by the window when Brother Coyote arrived, so we got several great pictures of him before he grew too wary this close to the house and ran. Actually, he pointed his nose towards my chicken pen and I started out the door. I love to see the Song Dogs – but those are MY chickens.

Tomorrow I get to drive slowly through the Gila National Forest in the early morning on my way to some training for the Census job. I am really looking forward to it. I’m sure I’ll be home with a long list of birds to share. Probably no photos, since our camera has begun giving us a lot of trouble and can eat a set of batteries in about five minutes flat.

Monday night I will quite likely be bored to death in a motel room – with my laptop. So I hope to get a lot of work done and perhaps even some writing and drawing of coloring pages.

We are still managing to scrape along. SSD has found a nice loophole – they didn’t approve OR deny hubby’s claim, just said call when he is actually on dialysis. Which at this rate could be a year or more away. Meanwhile, he cannot work. Ha ha on us. We contacted a lawyer and as long as they are just sitting on the application there isn’t a thing we can do.

But there is a rainbow outside my window – really, there is. It looks for all the world like it arcs over our back pasture. I hope the pixies are dancing around that pot of gold and remember to bring a little home for the humans. And it is raining again. Rain in the desert is always happy. If you are in town it is amazing to see people just get excited and laugh and giggle and run around. So here I sit under a double rainbow now – how can I possibly let anything bother me? That rainbow really is just getting brighter and looking closer every minute.

Blessedbe
