Feb. 21st is Card Reading Day, a holiday I only recently learned of. In the main, I am very cynical of “made up” holidays that exist just so the corp folks who sell candy, flowers, greeting cards, and gifts can make money by making you feel obligated to purchase any or all of the above. But after some thought, I’m going to backtrack a little on this particular holiday. Here’s why.

I know the most unsentimental of men – and more than one of them has a little cache somewhere of the greeting cards they have received from friends and loved ones over the years. And now and then, while searching for that lighter he’s sure is there somewhere, they run onto them, stop, read them over, smile, and then go on with their lives cheered and knowing someone really loves them, treasuring memories of good times they’ve had. More than one woman of my acquaintance has an entire shoebox full somewhere of greeting cards they’ve received from friends and family and lovers and every time they receive a new card, it goes in with the old ones – and they may spend an hour or two smiling and going through that box of good memories.

Yes, I have a box – or two – that hold greeting cards I’ve been given by friends and family. It is so heartwarming to go through them when I have occasion to add a new one. Some of them were mailed by friends far flung across more than one country, others were given to me at a birthday party or other occasion, signed by “the whole crew”. Either way they give me a smile and remind me that there are people out there who like me, really like me (LOL).

My hubby loves to get mail. He trots joyfully out to the mailbox every day, greeting the mail lady and half the time taking the mail from her hand before she gets it in the box. The childlike happiness when there is a greeting card in the mix is so good to see. Now and then I send him a greeting card, sometimes surprising him by having it rerouted through a friend so it will be postmarked from someplace “exotic” and make him wonder until he opens it. He get’s the biggest kick out of it.

So I’m going to plug Card Reading Day. I hope you’ll visit my link there, or any greeting card shop and choose a greeting card to send to a friend, loved one, family member. Tell them how much you love them, respect them, admire them or just let them know that you are thinking of them. Tuck in a photo of the kids, or the dog. Write them a little note about the days events, or tuck in a little gift they’ll enjoy like a bookmark for readers or humorous refrigerator magnet. Whatever they’ll get a kick out of. Who knows, maybe you’ll get a few greeting cards, too!

Myself – I am really ready for spring. I think I’m going to be sending these two greeting cards from my shop!
